More Than Bug Spray

By Nancy Rudner, League of Women Voters of Florida

Zika is here.  It is great that Florida is doing an all-out attack on mosquitos in the section of Miami where several people have been infected. But that is like a game of Wack-a-mo and Zika or other diseases will continue to occur.   Governor Scott urged women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant to contact their doctor for guidance and prevention. Sweet advice, but the reality is  almost a quarter million women in our state don’t have a health care provider because they lack health insurance, caught in the "coverage gap".

Our politicians, including Governor Scott, turned away $51 billion of tax dollars we already paid, dollars that would provide health coverage for Florida’s working poor as part of Obamacare.  Almost one in fourworking-age Floridians is uninsured.  And now mosquitos bring us a devastating disease that can spread faster with so many uninsured. It is time to take the money, close the coverage gap, and make Florida healthier.

It will take more than bug spray.
